Culture- Safety Culture: Function over form and moving things forward

Safety culture is one of the most intensely researched yet porrly understood concepts in safety science. A recent review identified over 100 different definitions. Academia debates endlessly while practitioners despair, and consultants capitalise on this confusion through propagating models and products that have little, if any, empirical grounding. In this masterclass, I will use an interactive format to trace the evolution of safety culture as a concept, starting from its earliest roots in Barry Turner’s Man Made Disasters theory through to the latest thinking that incorporates ideas and methods from New Materialism. The intent of this presentation is to provide a down-to-earth educational opportunity to enhance the literacy of practitioners around the safety culture concept, and provide guidance about current best practices in safety culture discovery. Case studies will also be used to illustrate various points.
