CULTURE: Understanding organisational culture and safety from the outside in
A positive safety culture remains a desired state many organisations wish to achieve. This desire will be framed against the findings of the latest review of the chapter on Organisational Culture for the OHS Body of Knowledge.
The findings of the review are used to explore the implications for practice for OHS professionals tasked with advising and influencing organisations on matters of culture and safety. In addition, it will be argued that a focus on safety culture and/or organisational culture is too narrow.
Rather, an outside in perspective is necessary to understand how societal culture shapes organisational culture and safety.
